Supporting Literacy Development for Students with Developmental Disabilities (12 hours)
This learning option will focus on emergent literacy for students with developmental disabilities. Participants will explore the role of education assistant as literacy partners. Participants will examine effective practices that support the development of reading, such as: the use of picture books as a context for literacy development, print concept assessment and shared reading.
Learning Outcomes
- To understand the evolution of literacy development and the continuum of literacy instruction as it relates to students with developmental disabilities
- To examine personal beliefs and understandings about literacy development of students with developmental disabilities
- To identify and apply select strategies that support literacy development
- To explore the role of education assistants as literacy partners
- To outline practices Education Assistants can use in current work with students
Provider/Format
This course can be delivered by district personnel through face to face instruction. Instructor should be a literacy teacher/consultant or speech-language pathologist with practical experience of students with cognitive improvements
