Information for School Districts

Process for Selecting and Delivering EA Training Initiatives

  • A committee that includes school district and local support staff union representation will select training offerings. The committee may choose from the list of fifteen learning modules developed by SSEAC, or may choose from outside sources.  If a school district and local support staff union intend to facilitate the training initiative through the use of SSEAC funding, the training must be delivered with the goal of increasing the skills and building the capacity of education assistants working in the K-12 public school system.

  • If the committee chooses any of the SSEAC learning modules listed below, contact should be made directly with the Provincial Outreach Program who will arrange instructors, discuss schedules, etc. These include the following:

Supporting Learners with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) - contact POPFASD for a qualified instructor

Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorder - contact POPARD for a qualified instructor

Assistive Technology - contact SET-BC for a qualified instructor

  • For the other learning modules, many districts will have appropriate instructors. The list of learning modules provides suggested credentials and skills for instructors of each option.

  • If a district does not have an instructor available, the committee should consider contacting the local post secondary institution and/or a special education administrator from a neighbouring school district. If those attempts are not successful, contact SSEAC (laurenk@bcpsea.bc.ca or lbowes@bcpsea.bc.ca) who will work with the committee to locate an instructor.

  • The curriculum content for each of the fifteen learning modules is password protected. If you are a school district and you are interested in providing one of the learning modules to the EAs in your school district, please contact Lauren Kullar (laurenk@bcpsea.bc.ca) or Leanne Bowes (leanneb@bcpsea.bc.ca) to obtain access.

  • To maximize the benefit to participants in the learning modules, school districts should consider keeping the group size to a maximum of 30.
